Mantashe is being hypocritical because the ANC itself was funded by the US in the run up to the 1994 general elections. What is good for the goose must also be good for the gander. And it is not clear if Dr Ramphele was funded by the US or some people in that country. Mantashe and his ilk think the ANC is preordained to rule South Africa for keeps.
In the early 1990’s, former ANC President Nelson Mandela went to fund-raise money from the Nation of Islam leader, Louis Farrakhan. In the sixteen years that it has been in power, ANC mouthpiece, the SABC, has reported once about Farrakhan yet Farrakhan raise issues of importance to Africans and people of African descent. He also speaks inconvenient truths and politicians, who are a bunch of liars, hate people like Farrakhan. That is why he can’t be covered by the public broadcaster (SABC). He speaks truth to power.
As the sixteenth year of ‘freedom’ ushered in, one sadly observed the evolution of media/press reportage over the years and concur that indeed the media is free only to those who own it. The media also shapes national culture and sets the limits of national discourse and reflects the interests of the ruling class.
The SABC as an institution is pathetic. It is partisan and animated by ideology. With corporate-controlled media consolidating its foothold on media ownership as well as spreading its tentacles globally, news content altered dramatically. We are continuously being fed a steady diet of rehashed intellectual pap. Almost invariably issues are perfunctorily dealt with and treated peremptorily coupled with un-insightful political debates.
